A Phonograph Puzzle: Unravel the Mystery of this Unique Polyphone!

Calling all antique phonograph enthusiasts and history buffs! Donley Auctions presents a truly extraordinary piece in our Rocktober Auction on Sunday, October 20: a Polyphone Prototype or Patent Model Cylinder Phonograph shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

This one-of-a-kind machine, housed in a hand-built mahogany cabinet, is a testament to early phonograph innovation. Its unique features and unknown origins have captivated collectors and experts alike.

Here's what makes this phonograph so special:

  • Possible Prototype/Patent Model: Experts believe this machine may be a prototype or patent model, potentially crafted by the Waltham Watch Company of Massachusetts. Its hand-made construction and early design elements point to a very early production date.

  • Unusual Features: The phonograph boasts two reproducers, possibly designed to circumvent Edison patents, and a unique carriage mechanism. The gears and motor appear to be unique to this machine, adding to its rarity.

  • Original Condition:  Despite some age-related wear, the phonograph retains its original finish and hardware, including the nickel plating on the mechanism and the winding key. It even comes with two original 14" aluminum horns!

  • Historical Significance: This machine offers a glimpse into the early days of phonograph development and the ingenuity of inventors pushing the boundaries of sound technology.
