Winchester M1D Garand Sniper Rifle in excellent condition with very minor wear. It sold at our Firearms, Ammo & Military Memorabilia Auction on Saturday, July 15 at Donley Auctions, for $4700.
Early in WWII, the U.S. Army Ground Forces requested that a sniper version of the M1 Garand rifle equipped with a telescopic sight be developed. After testing several proposed designs for M1 sniper rifles they concluded that the best solution would be to mount the telescope on the left side of the receiver so normal functioning of the rifle would be unaffected. Such an offset location required a leather cheek pad be attached to the stock to properly position the shooter’s face, but that was not viewed as a serious detriment.
The M1 Garand Sniper rifle was made in several configurations during WWII, the most notable being the M1C & M1D variations. The only real difference between the two models was the placement of the offset scope mounting bracket. As early as 1951, it was clear that the M1D, and not the M1C, was the favored design. By 1953, the M1D was the primary U.S. military sniper rifle, used by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corp. This M1D Sniper rifle was made in 1942 and is barrel dated 1965 (Vietnam War). It features a M84 telescopic sight with an upgraded M1D G&H mount, M2 detachable flash hider, MRT (3-59) leather cheek pad, butt stock cleaning kit and CMP brown leather sling. This gun is in excellent condition, has a sharp/ clean bore and is in perfect working order.
